Dry Needling
Dry Needling is a specialized treatment technique that utilizes thin, solid filament needles to deactivate and desensitize myofascial trigger points to reduce muscle spasm and eliminate the continuation of pain.
How does it work?
The insertion of the filament needle creates a controllable level of inflammation that helps jump start the local healing response in the dysfunctional, painful soft tissue. Blood flow is increased to the treated area which directly reduces toxins in the soft tissue. Neurotransmitters are simultaneously released to disrupt pain signals from being sent to the central nervous system.
Acupuncture vs. Dry Needling
The only similarity between acupuncture and Dry Needling is the type of needles that are utilized. Traditional Acupuncture targets meridians or energy channels and is based solely on Chinese medical theory. Dry Needling is based on anatomy and neurophysiology and targets trigger points or dysfunctional soft tissue and is based solely on current research and Western medical theory. 360 Physical Therapists are licensed by the Arizona State Board and have received an advanced training certificate in Dry Needling.
Is the treatment painful?
Most people do not feel the initial insertion of the filament needle. The treatment may cause a local muscle twitch response which patients typically describe as either a brief cramping or aching sensation.
How long does it take until I feel results?
In some cases decreased pain and improved mobility is immediate. Typically it may take a few treatment sessions for a lasting positive effect. It is important to note that Dry Needling is only a portion of the treatment necessary. Most conditions require other manual therapies, exercises, modalities and home programs necessary for a successful outcome and lasting results.
