Bell's Palsy
Bell's Palsy is the most common cause of unilateral facial paralysis. It is most commonly caused by autoimmune disorders or viral infections of an acute nature which leads to a swelling or inflammation of the facial nerve.
This leads to the presence of the following symptoms through the facial musculature:
- Facial muscle twitching, weakness and/or paralysis
- Drooping of the mouth or eye
- Drooling
- Dry eye or tearing of the eye
- Impaired taste
Physical Therapists utilize Dry Needling for active treatment of Bell's Palsy. Dry Needling is the use of a small monofilament needle that is inserted into the impaired musculature supplied by the facial nerve. The application of Dry Needling with electrotherapy allows for improved blood flow to promote healing of musculature and nerve regeneration.
How long does it take until I feel results?
Typically it may take a few treatment sessions for a lasting positive effect. It is important to note that Dry Needling is only a portion of the treatment necessary. Dry Needling is utilized in conjunction with exercises and an individualized home exercise program for a successful outcome and lasting results.
